It was about five years ago when Kevin Spacey first heard a story that both intrigued and entranced him – a group of M.I.T. students had taken the Vegas casinos for millions of dollars.
At the time he mentioned it to his producing partner, Dana Brunetti, and both men weren’t entirely sure whether it was urban myth, but they agreed that it was the basis for a great film.
“We didn’t know whether this was true or not but we heard from some people in Boston that it was and that it was like an open secret,” says Spacey. “We both thought that it was a very interesting movie idea and I think Dana wrote a treatment at that point too and it didn’t go anywhere.”

Filmbox.com: Who first approached you about 21 to propose you to play the leading actress?

Kate Bosworth: It was Kevin (Spacey). I had just finished a beautiful little film with Sigourney Weaver and directed by David Auburn called, “The Girl In The Park.” I was actually in the midst of planning a road trip across America when I received a call from Kevin saying, ‘come play with us in Vegas!’ How do you resist that? (laughs). I read the script and it was great- other than my female part. She was, at that point, pretty two-dimensional. She was the “hot fantasy girl.” And that’s it. The executives at Sony were great. They were very aware of that issue, and fortunately for me, were subsequently incredibly open to collaborate to create a more realistic female character- one with her own inner struggles and complications to overcome.

Jim Sturgess will never forget the first time he saw Las Vegas. The young English actor was flying across the desert from Los Angeles when he glimpsed the casino capital that would be his home for the next six weeks while filming 21 for director Robert Luketic.
“Robert had called me and said ‘I want to be with you when you first see Vegas to see your reaction’ and so we flew in together,” he explains. “I didn’t know what to expect. We were flying over this vast, beautiful desert and then suddenly there’s Vegas, this extraordinary oasis in the middle of nowhere, and it was just amazing. It was mind blowing.”
“And there’s a moment in the film when my character is looking out of the window as he sees Vegas for the first time and that’s exactly where it came from. Rob used exactly that same reaction. My face said it all – just amazement.”

Filming in Las Vegas is a surreal, sometimes bizarre, funny and extraordinary experience, says director Robert Luketic. But it’s never dull. Luketic and his crew camped out in the middle of the biggest party town in the world to make 21. And it’s a rollercoaster ride that he will never forget.

Shoot On Sight, a film produced by Aron Govil under the banner Cine Boutique Entertainment and directed by Jag Mundhra, will be screened at the prestigious Cannes Film festival on May 14, 2008 by American World Pictures.
