Critically Acclaimed Werner Herzog “Encounters at the End of the World” Advances in Voting Process for 81st Academy Awards
Image Entertainment, Inc., a independent licensee, producer and distributor of entertainment programming in North America, announced today that Werner Herzog’s “Encounters at the End of the World” was one of 15 documentaries selected by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts & Sciences to advance in the voting process for consideration as a nominee for “Best Documentary Feature” for the upcoming 81st Academy Awards presentation.
“Encounters at the End of the World” was released theatrically by Image on June 11, 2008 and on DVD November 18. The film was one of 94 documentaries qualified in the category that were reviewed by the Academy’s Documentary Branch Screening Committee. The final nominees will be announced on January 22, along with the rest of the 2009 Academy Award nominations. The Oscar telecast will be held on February 22, 2009.

The film is a one-of-a-kind documentary about a group of remarkable people who live, work, play and struggle to survive by the South Pole. The award-winning director takes audiences on a stunning journey through Antarctica and its harsh landscape of mesmerizing, otherworldly beauty of what is regarded as the last frontier on earth.
Encounters at the End of the World is a Creative Differences Production in association with Discovery Films and Discovery Channel. The film was written, directed & narrated by Werner Herzog. Joe Bini served as editor; Peter Zeitlinger is director of photography with original music by Henry Kaiser and David Lindley. For Creative Differences, Erik Nelson is the executive producer, along with Dave Harding and Phil Fairclough. The film is produced by Henry Kaiser with Tree Leyburn as the associate producer. For Discovery Films, Andrea Meditch is executive producer and for Discovery Channel, Julian P. Hobbs is executive producer.
